NISP is based on Queen's Island in Belfast, once one of the busiest and most famous shipbuilding areas of the world. Throughout the twentieth century Harland & Wolff was associated with many of the liners, other capital ships and sea-going entities that ploughed the oceans of the world. The Canberra, HMS Belfast, Southern Cross and Sea Quest oil exploration rig were household names. No liner, however, is better known throughout the globe nor has evoked more emotion and interest than the RMS Titanic. Launched in 1912, she perished on her maiden voyage the same year following a collision with an iceberg off the coast of Labrador. You will be able to walk around the designated Thompson Titanic Trail along the eastern edges of each Dock with a guided tour inside and around the listed Pump-House. NISP also aims to create a network of Science Park facilities throughout Northern Ireland, with a thriving community of tenant businesses seeking to exploit the university research base with industrial applications. The Parks will have a high quality built environment and infrastructure, supported by high-speed telecoms, enabling tenant companies to focus on knowledge-based entrepreneurialism. 2. TITANIC TOUR (£10) Depart 13.30
Return by 15.30 It's amazing how many visitors from abroad don't realise that the Titanic was actually built in Belfast! Because she bore the name of the port of Liverpool on her stern people assume that this was where she was built. In fact Liverpool was simply the home port of the White Star Line fleet of which Titanic was the ultimate flagship. Titanic was conceived, designed, built and launched in Belfast and... as they proudly say locally "She was alright when she left here!!!" This private guided boat trip to the birthplace of the Titanic takes in the historic Harland & Wolff shipyards and the famous Titanic sites around Belfast Harbour including the Titanic slipways, with expert commentary from members of the Belfast Titanic Society. The harbour area itself has always been a romantic and mysterious place, full of interesting sights, sounds and history, an exciting place which reeks of adventure and far off places! As a busy working port, most of it has been inaccessible to the public for many years unless you were employed in the shipping or shipbuilding industries, or were a passenger aboard an incoming or outgoing ferry or liner. This tour is a unique opportunity to experience all those exciting travel urges that seem to grip your senses in such a place! The tour boat M.V. 'Joyce Too' is fully weatherproof and heated. |
